Schools Coast to Coast Challenge and Project

Journey from west to east coast of Scotland

Our Highland challenge will take teams on a journey across Scotland, using only their own power, by bikes, boots, and paddles.  The adventure starts in Fort William, in the shadow of mighty Ben Nevis, where they’ll begin their adventure by sorting kit and buying provisions for the first few days.  After an overnight stay in Fort William the team commence the challenge by bike ride along the Caledonian Canal, part of the Great Glen Fault which a series of Lochs that include Loch Ness.  The fault and canal link the mountainous West coast to the East coast and the stunning Moray Firth. At Fort Augustus teams strike a route directly eastwards into the mountains where they’ll locate the very source of the River Spey before it becomes navigable.  Having reached Speyside and the Cairngorm National Park (CNP), they will undertake their environmental conservation project. On successful completion of their project teams will take on the remainder of the challenge with the River Spey descent, finishing their amazing journey paddling into the Spey Bay in the Moray Firth, a true coast to coast in every sense.

Our overall aim is to support students to develop essential life skills such as resilience, teamwork, empathy, problem solving and communication. This expedition challenges teams to travel under their own steam over this mountainous and demanding route, stopping en route to undertake their project. Under the guidance of two experienced leaders the team will manage their travel, pitch and strike camps, food supplies, and cooking.  They’ll need to work together to overcome issues they encounter … just like real life.

We work with selected charities and NGO partners to develop team projects that are sustainable solutions to an issue faced by a local community or natural ecosystem. The project phase enables students to get hands-on in working towards a worthwhile goal.

Working with our partners Cairngorm Connect and their constituent members, teams will undertake a range of environmental projects that are both sustainable and part of the ongoing management plan for the area. All the projects will be hands on and some will be in wild and remoter parts of the CNP, others may be in more popular visitor locations and some on the river itself.

Coast to Coast Scotland will take the team away from the most often visited parts of Scotland on a journey through some fascinating landscapes with myriad opportunities to make curricular links, especially in the areas of biology and geography.

From cycling the famous Caledonian Canal that links the Atlantic with the Moray Coast and the North Sea, to trekking through some of Scotland’s most beautiful and least visited mountains into the stunning Cairngorm National Park, and then paddling Britain’s fastest flowing river, this route offers up different challenges where each student should have the opportunity to shine.

Teams will manage all aspects of their journey including the purchase of food, the organising of the camping and cooking and making sure that they operate as a team. Throughout this they will be supported by our experienced leaders and by the environmental experts whilst on the project. An adventure not to be missed.

The Journey

Coast to Coast Scotland will take the team away from the most often visited parts of Scotland on a journey through some fascinating landscapes with myriad opportunities to make curricular links, especially in the areas of biology and geography.

From cycling the famous Caledonian Canal that links the Atlantic with the Moray Coast and the North Sea, to trekking through some of Scotland’s most beautiful and least visited mountains into the stunning Cairngorm National Park, and then paddling Britain’s fastest flowing river, this route offers up different challenges where each student should have the opportunity to shine. The canoeing in this expedition will be up to level 3  on our whitewater rating.

Teams will manage all aspects of their journey including the purchase of food, the organising of the camping and cooking and making sure that they operate as a team. Throughout this they will be supported by our experienced leaders and by the environmental experts whilst on the project. An adventure not to be missed.

Embrace the challenge and remember the unique experience!

Our aim is to take our student teams out of their comfort zone.  This is a physical expedition that will develop character and resilience. Students will need to be capable of cycling approximately 25 miles a day for a total of six days, over a strenuous route.

Teams will camp throughout the expedition. A support vehicle will carry all the equipment during the expedition but teams will need to work together to manage the budget, setting up camp and cooking all the meals.
