Our teams meet the experienced ascent support team at our hostel in Arequipa. The requirements are explained and the teams head for the park at the very foot of this volcanic monster. The first day is spent climbing gradually to the midway point and our campsite for the night…..or part of the night.
The campsite affords spectacular views across the valley to Arequipa made all the more special by its twinkling lights and the towering summit above the tents.
In most mountain ascents the final summit push is undertaken from an early start and this ascent is no exception. A small path winds its way through the millions of years of detritus surrounding the peak and teams work hard to reach the final summit ridge and finally the summit with relief, pride and success. The view from the top of this peak is well worth the effort; teams can rest, relax and watch the mountain slowly cast its shadow across the valley to Arequipa.
The rapid descent afforded by the longest scree slope on the planet adds fun and relief to teams who arrive back at the campsite for refreshment and the return to Arequipa where a shower is very much appreciated.
