LAKE TITCACA & UROS ISLAND, BALLESTAS ISLANDS
Expedition Duration: 1 -2 Days (dependant on which site you wish to visit
Description: Guided by VF leaders and local tour guides.
Expedition Level: Site seeing
Lake Titicaca is regarded as the highest navigable lake in the world. The lake located in the Andes forms a natural border with Bolivia which in the past caused Peru to requisition two British built steamers for their Navy. The boats were sailed from Britain, dismantled at the coast and carried to the lake where they were reassembled and altered to run on Lama Dung before being decommissioned!
It is also home to the Uros Islands, constructed and occupied by the Uros people. Originally constructed for defense, the islands could be literally removed from one mooring and moved to the next. At this present time the existing islands act as a reminder of a time gone by and the unique lives of these wonderful people.
From the city of Puno our teams can take a tour (varying in length specify from what to what) to visit the islands and cruise the remarkable lake at 3812m. Three times higher than any of the UK’s mountains!!
The Belestas Island are located off the pacific coastline south of the captial city Lima. The remarkable island are visited by power boat wher views wildlife packed islands are remarkable. The skilfull and careful boat captains take visitors to within metre of the wildlife. It just has to be seen to be believed.
